Simulation at the Simulation Center is NOW CANCELLED

Good afternoon,

I received an email on Friday afternoon regarding the temporary waiver of regulations for graduating students. After taking some time to think about this change and talking to other nearby college leaders and Centra leadership, I have decided that we will cancel all stimulation scheduled at the Simulation Center and start virtual simulation in the near future. If your course is scheduled for in-person simulation, please DO NOT come to the college. If COVID-19 continues to be problematic after the first week of April 2020, we will have to continue to find creative experiences for the students to complete with virtual simulation.

As you can read with the regulations listed below, hours maybe waived for students on track to graduate, I understand this to be our seniors graduating in May 2020. In addition, if the VBON did not want us to make a ‘good faith effort’ to continue to provide clinical experiences to students, the regulation allowing greater than 50% simulation for total clinical hours for any one course would not have been changed. As health care professionals, we must maintain integrity of our college programs to provide safe and competent nurses to healthcare facilities upon graduation.

18VAC90-27-100(A) Minimum hours of direct client care.

“A nursing education program preparing a student for licensure as a registered nurse shall provide a minimum of 500 hours of direct client care supervised by qualified faculty. A nursing education program preparing a student for licensure as a practical nurse shall provide a minimum of 400 hours of direct client care supervised by qualified faculty. Direct client care hours shall include experiences and settings as set forth in 18VAC90-27-90 B 1.”

Waived for those students who are on schedule to meet the requirements for program completion/graduation.

18VAC90-27-100(D)(1) Simulation for total clinical hours.

“No more than 25% of direct client contact hours may be simulation. For prelicensure registered nursing programs, the total of simulated client care hours cannot exceed 125 hours (25% of the required 500 hours). For prelicensure practical nursing programs, the total of simulated client care hours cannot exceed 100 hours (25% of the required 400 hours).”

Waived for those students who are on schedule to meet the requirements for program completion/graduation.

18VAC90-27-100(D)(2) Simulation for clinical hours in a single course.

Waived for all students enrolled in a clinical course, “no more than 50% of the total clinical hours for any course may be used as simulation.”
