Climbing Higher Ministries, Inc. provides a 3 day Summer Camp experience for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Climbing Higher Ministries aspires to help those with special needs CLIMB HIGHER in their relationship with Christ. The camp will be held June 5-7, 2018 at Camp Pitt in Chatham, VA. This year’s theme is "Believe It or Not - That's in the Bible."
This camp offers an opportunity to work with adults with special needs providing various outdoor activities, crafts, music, and socialization, along with Christian ministry – all synchronized with the camp theme.
Several volunteer options for are available:
· Camp staff – assigned to one or more campers, accompanying them to activities and assisting with activities of daily living, including morning and nighttime routines.
· Camp Nurse assistant.
· Volunteers can choose to come to camp daily, part time, or stay at camp the duration.
(Camp is technically only 2 half-days and 1 full day. Campers arrive on Tuesday at 2 pm and are dismissed on Thursday after lunch. Assistance is particularly needed the night prior to set up medication records, with check-in and check-out)
Joyce Scott, RN, CCON, Faculty Instructor will be working as the camp nurse for the special needs camp. This will be the fourth year that students have participated – a great opportunity to serve, work, and learn together with some very special individuals.
Camp nurse assistant activities, under the direction of the registered nurse, include:
assisting in medication preparation and dispensing, checking blood glucose, administration of insulin, and treatment of hypoglycemia (those campers with diabetes); minor first aid treatment, monitoring activities that may present risk for injury, and promoting positive health and hygiene habits in all activities.
This is a volunteer opportunity and is open to any Centra College of Nursing student (or faculty, or staff). In addition to being fun and rewarding, this activity would be valuable to include in the student portfolio.
Completion of a camp application form, including references is required by the camp administrators.
