Camp Nurse Assistant
Climbing Higher Ministries Summer Camp for Special Needs Adults
Joyce Scott, RN, CCON, Faculty Instructor will be working as camp nurse for the annual special needs camp sponsored by Climbing Higher Ministries - and is seeking volunteers to assist in camp nurse activities; - assisting with medications, minor 1st aid treatment, and much more.
Climbing Higher Ministries, Inc. provides a 3-day Summer Camp experience for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This camp aspires to help those with special needs “climb higher” in their relationship with Christ. The camp will be held June 4-6, 2019 at Camp Pitt
in Chatham, VA.
This camp offers an opportunity to work with adults with special needs providing various outdoor activities, crafts, music, and socialization, along with Christian ministry – all synchronized with the camp theme. This year’s theme is "Island Paradise."
Several volunteer options for are available: (all or any part of these)
· Monday evening, June 3, 6-9 pm
o Assist in preparation of medication administration records and health history forms for use at camp.
· Camp Nurse assistant
o Assist with check-in* on Tuesday afternoon, 2pm-5 pm
o During camp [all or part of the day]: assist Camp Nurse in medication preparation and dispensing, check blood glucose, administer insulin, assist in minor first aid treatment, and monitor activities that may present risk for injury.
Camp nurse assistant also works during camp to promote positive health and hygiene habits in all activities.
o Assist with check-out* on Thursday afternoon, 12 noon -2 pm.
· Camp staff [all or part of the day]:
o assigned to one or more campers, accompanying them to activities and assisting with activities of daily living, including morning and nighttime routines.
· Volunteers can choose to come to camp daily, part time, or stay at camp the duration.
Camp is technically only 2 half-days and 1 full day with 2 overnights.
(Campers arrive on Tuesday at 2 pm and are dismissed on Thursday after lunch.)
* Assistance is particularly needed the night prior to set up medication records, with check-in and check-out)
This is a volunteer opportunity and is open to any Centra College of Nursing student (or faculty, or staff). In addition to being fun and rewarding, this activity serves as a valuable addition to include in the student portfolio.
Completion of a camp application form is required by the camp administrators. (obtain from Ms Scott)
